Review: 'HAMFATTER'
'DO SOMETHING STUPID TONIGHT'

-  Label: 'PINK HEDGEHOG'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'February 2008'

Our Rating:
When the first few bars of your single evoke vicious memories of Jack Penate, it's hard to get a good review from me. And this release from HAMFATTER does nothing else to redress the balance. 'Do Something Stupid Tonight' is another twee, simply chorded indie-pop song, that (thank fuck) is already so 2007. Slowly sung but jaunty verses lead into even jauntier chorus – the hook this time is that “You have no ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-ope.”

Surely this has come at the worst time for them. It would appear that they were signed in the summer of 2007 when everyone still seemed the find this kind of chirpy nonsense endearing. But the Winter has hardened us and we want cynicism with our guitars. Which may have been addressed with 'Down Tonight,' which just turns into a second-rate Lightspeed Champion song. It's a simple song about loneliness, but the sentiment seems far from personal.

This is just identikit indie that will make an impression on only a few. With so much music out there, it's hard to see how anyone could make this their favourite. Neither soaringly happy, nor brilliantly despondent, these just aren't songs that grab you either way.
