Review: 'DOMINO STATE, THE'
'WHAT'S THE QUESTION?'

-  Label: 'POPFICTION/ CLUB AC30'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'April 2008'

Our Rating:
The Domino State present this single as a statement of intent. There is a career plan mapped out here, and it's to get out of the smaller venues as soon as possible and start wowing the masses. The idea is this – moody, indie music with big sweeping moments and helping upon helping of gloom. It's been well produced and they are definitely thinking big, but that doesn't make it interesting.

'What's the Question?' sounds like U2 covering The Smiths – it's been designed for the stadiums, but it is essentially formless and has nothing that will stick in your head. The repetition in the chorus of the title sounds pained, but not in an emotional way – it just makes you wish someone would give him the fucking answer so he'd shut up. It's goes on for a hell of a long time, which is quite a lot of dreary to take in one sitting.

B-side 'Big Six Wheel' doesn't up the pace. The Echo and the Bunnymen style guitar effects run through this song as well, which sounds this time like U2 taking on a pre-'The' Verve. It sounds dated and tried and tested. It's unlikely that these songs will make a glittering career – it needs to sound less contrived were it to succeed in actually moving anyone. They sound too much like their influences to be anything more than pale imitations.
