Review: 'WALKER, DOUG'
'THE MYSTERY'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '10th March 2008'

Our Rating:
It's still a bit too soon after the Kaiser Chiefs first album for 'na-na-na-na's' to be making a return to mainstream sounding indie isn't it? I must admit, a pulled a face that looked a little like I was having a stroke during the first few seconds of hearing this song – and I cannot report that things really improved from here.

'The Mystery' sounds like a Cliff Richard fronted interpretation of a stereotypical Jam song. It has a traditional jaunty indie beat, and the standard verse-chorus-versus-chorus-chant indie structure. At best, it's trying to be thought of alongside Liam Frost or Elliot Smith but the reality is that it's just another forgettable twee, ball-less song. The world doesn't need to be all mean, dark and evil all of the time; but if this is what the nicer side of life looks like, well you can keep your stage-school indie bollocks, hand me one of your bitter pills and lets be sardonic.

There is no need for another song built around hand-claps and na-na-na's, plinkety-pink keyboards and weak, wimpy vocals. You've heard this song before, and I assure you that each time you've heard it, it was probably better than this. Even Jack Penate is better than this. This wouldn't have sounded out of place on Take That's comeback trail – it's just another cynical attempt at appealing to people by barely even rehashing what has been done before.

Just ignore it – it might go away.
