Review: 'JONES, LAURIE'
's/t'

-  Label: 'Reversing Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '2007'-  Catalogue No: 'RR16'

Our Rating:
Despite being self-titled, this is Laurie Jones' third album. It was recorded in Portland,Maine.

It is a set of crisp, commercial songs which straddle the genres of country, gospel and pop.

The album opens with a 19th century a cappella hymnal and ends with full blooded Americana. In between are a clutch of radio friendly songs about life, love and the quest for fame.

Laurie Jones' band are slick and she sings with spirit and enthusiasm but it is one of those records that while hard to fault on a purely technical level doesn't really tweek any emotional buttons.

Curiously it is an atypical untitled hidden track that stands out. This has a loose, experimental feel in which Jones' voice is subjected to studio trickery and the band plays with less restraint as if relishing being let off a tight leash.

More of this risk taking spirit would have done wonders for this album to make it more than simply a polished exercise in easy listening.

Nice cover though.
