Review: 'POLKA PARTY'
'JAPANESE HAIRCUT'

-  Label: 'HAPPY RELEASE'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'June 2008'

Our Rating:
When Franz Ferdinand return, will they find that all of their riffs have been used up? Polka Party have nicked one here for their debut single ‘Japanese Haircut.’ And that’s about as good as it gets. The vocals on this song are just another mouthy southern voice sounding both bored and smug. It’s all geared up to sound a bit funky in a Bloc Party way, but it just sounds like a cheap imitation.

The lyrics are no better – a clumsy attempt at satirising the achingly cool which has been done literally hundreds of times in recent years. “All her clothes they are designer, little blonde girl with black eyeliner.” It’s a needlessly bitchy song, which never really gets going, or offers anything that hasn’t been churned out by countless bands in recent years.

It’s well constructed – they know how to make their indie-rock, but whilst Manchester is clamouring with Oasis wannabes, Polka Party are the southern equivalent. A little bit too Parklife way too late. Next.
