Review: 'VESSELS'
'A HUNDRED TIMES IN EVERY DIRECTION'

-  Label: 'Cuckundoo Records (download only single)'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '16 June 2008'

Our Rating:
"White Fields and and Open Devices" will be the début album that Cuckundoo Records plan to release this summer and this single is an auspicious foretaste.

The album was recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Minneapolis with John Congleton as producer, Congleton has also done work for APPLESEED CAST and EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY.

The wide-ranging ambition of last year's "Two Words and a Gesture" single can be taken as read.

VESSELS have the heart and the brain to conquer sweet, dark, heavy, analogue, digital, lyrical, melodic and bludgeoning in a single ascending arc of euphoric music. In Leeds we have seen the potential,. On record, Congleton has allowed them to achieve it in exhilarating fashion.

Six minutes, twenty four seconds of "A HUNDRED TIMES IN EVERY DIRECTION"seems less like a prog extension of one good song than a ferociously edited-down album of possibilities. The result is that it always seems to finish too quickly. For this reviewer that's a real measure of a single's quality. The best ones are always too short and they always have to be left on repeat.

There's a hedonistic, pummelling (double) crescendo. There's a delicate and close-grained opening and bridging section. Tom Evans' ethereal singing lays out a beautiful tune, and is layered up for maximun chorus power across some crunching and stinging guitar. It's wholemeal organic and its very exciting.

That album is going to be good.

The download package includes a re-recording of the melodic "Yuki" with very rich piano chords (how nice to hear a real quality piano!). Electronic and human percussion, delicate acoustic guitar, sound samples and synth fills build towards the climax. A new version of "The Beast" and Lee J. Malcolm's remix of the original version of "Yuki" are are formidable bonus treats.
