Review: 'MAN LIKE ME'
''Carny''

-  Label: 'So Sweet(USA)/Prestel(www.myspace.com/manlikeme)'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '28th July 2008'

Our Rating:

Essentially the product of the collaborative powers of MLM main man Johnny Langer and New Sins producer/keyboard player Nick Phillips, ‘Carny’ is an ultra-positive blend of crazy styles that underlines Man Like Me’s undoubted strength as a live act.

This is the jet engine sound of freedom alright! The choppy funk guitar comes flooded with muted brass sounds, whilst FX and the screaming sound of the fairground combine in a ska-tinged jam that’s as dizzy and uplifting as any spin on the waltzers.

Screams pepper the techno crossfire as the groove dips and swerves to soar above and plunge below the subsonic core of the track, but the much-needed feelgood factor is in full effect throughout this sunshine rhyme in 4/4 time. Langer’s MC skip even allows the flow to bounce to within a whisker of a 1980’s Modern Romance nightmare, before the pair pull it back from the brink thanks to the sheer power of celebration.

Deliciously superficial, 'Carny' (short for Carnival)is also impossibly catchy and endearing. If ever a track screamed ‘Summertime’ then this is it. Superb.
