Review: 'Feed the Need'
'Feed the Need'

-  Label: 'Blank Lane Records'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '2008'

Our Rating:
They may sing about not landing the girl of their dreams, but New York-based Feed the Need (http://www.feedtheneedmusic.com) sound happier than most of their peers, many of whom are either on the punk or emo side of the fence. Feed the Need are not punk nor emo; in fact, they were probably the kids in school who actually learned to play their instruments before starting a band. The group's most obvious influences are Sublime, Jack Johnson, the Beatles, and Steely Dan; you can hear where they learned their skills besides dedicated practice.

For a band that is still learning the ropes, Feed the Need are ahead of the curve. On "Ride the Wave" the group is giddy on the knotty rhythm they've structured, a jammy brew of jazz and surf-riding pop. "Someday" is a pleasantly jangly cover of Sugar Ray's last Top-40 smash, and the track seems to be made for Feed the Need with its romantic longing and good vibrations. "Jamaica Breeze" is probably one of the most mature cuts on here, musically speaking, as the band is propelled by a dreamy riff. The guitars are layered and atmospheric on "Way Back When."

Feed the Need is a group with a sparklingly bright future ahead of them, and the present leaves us starry-eyed, too.
