Not really being a big metal fan, it’s hard to be too cocksure about slating metal songs outright. In fact, there are many elements of metal that I am fond of; metal drummers are generally the most energetic and interesting drummers to listen to. Some metal riffs are monumental, and the basis of the songs generally appeal to me in the same way a lot of guitar driven music does. They go through many stages and don’t just stick to a simple verse-chorus
The problem with a lot of metal for me is that the vocals are usually whiny and the choruses just too lumbering and cheesy “We are the warriors,” indeed. It’s especially saddening when it’s a British band adopting phoney American accents to become mere genre copyists. Exit Ten are from Reading, but sound like they hail from some angry US metropolis. They play by all the rules of metal songs, right down to the quiet bit before breaking back in for a loud finale.

It’s formula metal, to my untrained ears. It’s not remarkable, and it’s definitely not enough for a metal cynic (that is, I really like about ten metal bands historically) to sit up and take notice.
