Review: 'FRENCH QUARTER, THE'
'WE'RE NOT FRENCH (ep)'

-  Label: 'self released (www.myspace.com/thefrenchquarter)'
-  Genre: 'Post-Rock' -  Release Date: '15th September 2008'

Our Rating:
Not French, but Scottish, and recent graduates of the Mogwai quiet -loud school of post-rock. Actually it's more in the quiet-quiet vein as they keep things on a pretty even keel and don't venture into apocalyptic climaxes.

The demo tracks were written in 'The Pad', Tillicoultry between 2006 and 2007 then recorded and mixed by Andy Miller at Chem 19, Hamilton in March 2008.

The five piece play guitar, piano, bass, drums and glockenspiel to produce a confident and highly polished sound. The hushed vocals of Frank Murray have a slightly menacing hard man quality but the warmth of the band sound smoothes down the sharp edges.

Unusually for this genre, the songs are quite short – the longest being the 5 minute closing track called ‘Time To Leave’ and all seven tracks clock in at under 25 minutes.

The demo includes a couple of instrumental fragments which you imagine could, and probably should, be developed into lengthier pieces.

While still obviously work in progress, this is undeniably a very promising demo and they are certainly a band to watch out for.
