Review: 'WOMBATS, THE'
'IS THIS CHRISTMAS'

-  Label: '14TH FLOOR RECORDINGS(www.14thfloorrecords.com)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '15th December 2008'-  Catalogue No: '14THFLR33CD'

Our Rating:
Hoorah, it's Christmaaaas! And what did Santa drop through my letterbox? Why, it was the new festive single from cheeky scouse bubblegum angst punks the Wombats and naked celebrity Les Dennis.

Laugh and cheer as Les proclaims that "not a creature was stirring except for a Wombat" in his chirpy tones.

As you would expect, it is a fast paced and catchy affair that conjurs up images of Merv the lead singer looking forlorn with his head in his hands and sitting in front of a big pile of yuletide Turkey and spuds, paper crown wilting slightly. However, I can't help think of the Half Man Half Biscuit song 'It's cliched to be cynical at Christmas.' And The Wombats are very cynical. Despite the fact that they must recieve a lot of well smart pressies.

Musically, they are going for a slightly heavier and more Christmassy sound than the earlier releases which I think makes a better vehicle for the angry vocals. I think they should carry on writing christmas songs and employ a sleigh bell player as it is a good angle to break America. Seriously though, It's not a million miles away from previous releases but that's no bad thing if you like high energy rock songs with infectious melodies. I shall give 'Is this Christmas' 7 out of 10 because Slade and Wizzard did it better.

'Is this Christmas' is out on the 15th of December through 14th floor records and in keeping with the christmas spirit, the profits from it's sale will be donated to MENCAP. It would provide an ideal stocking filler for any 14 year old girl. Although, providing stocking fillers for 14 year old girls is sometimes frowned on by society so be careful.
