Perhaps one of the weirder moments in recent pop music. This is the debut release from Mary Epworth and The Jubilee Band, and it should have you reaching for a tankard and stomping along in no time.
To coin a term, it’s assertive folk music, kind of mediaeval and nautical at the same time. The whole song kicks in with no fanfare and commands your attention from the first note. It’s equal parts Camelot and Portland Bill – brooding and waltzing, wailing but infectious. It conjures up images of mythology and tales told about the past. It crams an awful lot into just over two minutes.

Second track ‘Sweet Boy’ sounds just like a Scout Niblett song, and lacks the impact or identity of ‘The Saddle Song.’ It’s pleasant enough, but it lacks any discerning features to make it stand out. It’s a huge contrast from the fiddles and pomp of the the first track and probably suffers from the comparison.
But both tracks showcase a real talent in Epworth. There is enough in these two tracks to make her debut album something to look forward to.
