Review: 'McGUINNESS, EUGENE'
'FONZ (7" & download)'

-  Label: 'DOMINO (www.myspace.com/eugenemcguinness)'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '23rd February 2009'-  Catalogue No: 'RUG316'

Our Rating:
EUGENE McGUINNESS' eponymous debut has been turning discerning heads of late. There's no surprise in that: it's a quirkily affecting record with loads of great tunes, fine attention to detail and intelligence to spare. The kind of thing that's all-too rare in 'indie' pop these days, basically.

Culled from said opus, 'Fonz' was always a dead cert as a single. It's immediate, playful, deceptively knockabout pop full of intrusive beats and guitars going from dreamy and shimmery to Buzzcocks-style fuzzy and aggressive in well under ten seconds. Vocally, Eugene's got it going on, too – he even manages the seemingly de rigeur falsetto inflection without making me wanting to knock his block off. Which is more than can be said for Messrs. Martin and Lightbody.

To cap it all, 'Fonz' is a cheeky li'l number too. You'll probably blink and miss some smart'n'saucy little observations like “we said farewell and synchronized our watches/ arranged for the meeting of our crotches”, but you'll smile to think they'll make it past the censors on daytime radio.

So there you go. 'Fonz' drips with confidence and cool and breezes past you in 2 minutes 23. Er, Happy Days or wot?
