It’s hard to respect music you could beat in a fight. Not saying much about my lack of physical strength, it’s just songs like ‘If You Leave Today’ are just a little too reminiscent of Cliff Richard. In fact, it’s like the Kaiser Chiefs playing backing band to Cliff Richard. Its simple sixties guitar pop; an ailing love ditty with a warm heart. It’s for those of a sweeter disposition than me, those with treacle running through their veins. It’s all very slick and it’s over pretty quickly – traditional verse-chorus, with no frills underneath.
Both tracks can be described at best as slightly angular indie – simple, but also forgettable. If you’re living by the pop chorus, you should always make sure it’s a good one. B-side ‘By Your Side’ reminds me of ‘Sultans of Swing,’ but that’s about a bluesy as it gets. It’s a shuffle of a song, and totally inoffensive. It’s not something I want to slate but I won’t be rushing to hear it again. Some people are just effortlessly nice – we can’t all be dark and there’s a place for everyone out there. But you know what you like in this world and I don’t judge things by how lovely they are.
