Review: 'YOUNG, WILL'
'LET IT GO'

-  Label: 'BMG'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'March 2009'

Our Rating:
It perhaps says something about the degeneration of mainstream music into talent show hell when Will Young has to be considered the best of a bad bunch. That’s not to say there’s anything enjoyable about this anaemic balladeering, but you have to have a grudging respect for the fact that he’s still around in spite of everything.

Would there be a Will Young if people didn’t have mothers? It’s hard to say. ‘Let It Go’ is, I assume, meant to be heartfelt and soaring. It is in fact quite obviously bland and over-produced. There will be inane couples out there making it ‘their’ song no doubt – it has that glossy cinematic feeling. String-laden and strained, this is exactly what a Will Young song sounds like. One suspects that he has a whole career of these identikit sub-Westlife croon-a-longs already recorded, waiting to be released for the Valentines / Mothers’ Day season of mush.

It’s the musical equivalent of a blank piece of paper. There are a few displays of vocal gymnastics which make up the most notable parts of the song, but only because they sound like someone is poking him in the sides. I’d name all the other Will Young songs that it sounds like, but to be honest I can’t remember the names of those either.   Please make it stop.
