Review: 'SILENT FILM PROJECT'
'TWO DAYS (7" & download)'

-  Label: 'KIDS RECORDS (www.myspace.com/asilentfilmproject)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '25th May 2009'

Our Rating:
The old adage that says “what goes around comes around” is consistently borne out in music. So much so that genres we assumed would probably never rear their ugly head again now seem to be striding around without fear of reprisal once more.

The success of Jack Penate's earnest, white boy pop jangle appears to have been the catalyst, because traditional Indie guitar fare seems to be back. Oh well. It had to happen, I guess, especially since the angular Post-Punk revivalists have finally run out of steam at last.

Scunthorpe-birthed, but Sheffield-based quintet SILENT FILM PROJECT are amongst the first batch of exuberant janglers off the blocks. With the emphasis very much on fun and youthful exuberance, their debut single 'Two Days' is whippy, skinny of guitar and riding those still-pervasive disco drum rhythms. With boy-girl harmonies supplied by Paul Musgrave and Lisa O'Hara, they have already been on the receiving end of Smiths comparisons, although to these ears the likes of Hurrah! or several of the acts populating the much-maligned Sarah Records stable spring to mind. Mind you, SFP appear to be gutsier than the latter, which is welcome if there's going to be more where this comes from.

B-side 'Alligator' is more to this jaded hack's liking actually. This time, the song actually does have a Johnny Marr-style guitar figure egging it on and a palpable urgency which soon gets it off the ground. It's steely and unafraid and can only bode well if pursued.

So let's take a rain check for now. Silent Film Project probably won't make the earth move, but the odd tremor may not be beyond them either. Let's give 'em twelve months and see what transpires.
