Review: 'McGUINNESS, EUGENE'
'Moscow State Circus [Single]'

-  Album: 'Eugene McGuinness' -  Label: 'Domino Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '27th October 2008'-  Catalogue No: 'RUG303CDP'

Our Rating:
Eugene McGuinness, a twenty-two year old troubadour based in Liverpool, has unleashed "Moscow State Circus", a single from his self-titled début album. Playful, infectious and fidgety, the track manages the rather impressive feat of being taut and compact yet gleefully all over the place.

McGuinness' ringmaster-esque, booming vocals, full of gravitas and verve, announce his bizarre lyrics like he's welcoming the human cannonball into the ring. The music sounds rich, substantial but poppy - piano, drums, and all manner of guitars compete for the ascendency - and the lyrics veer wildly between surreal lunacy - "And remember not to forget/That I am as subtle and as playful/As a hammer headed shark/But I could name you every service station/On the M6 off by heart" - and slightly surprising profanity - "It's all a bloody jambouree/This banger carries me up and away/Couldn't give a flying fuck/What the old Parkonians say".

I'm not entirely sure what it's all about, to be honest. But it's fun, silly and eccentrically daft.
