Our Rating:
This Beautiful Thief are a Birmingham based indie melodic rock band, who gave away their last year’s debut album ‘Earth Terminal Sessions as a free download in order to allow people to hear their music and to develop their fan base, more than 3000 downloads were taken from their website.

This, their latest EP follows the album much in the same vein. It is a five track EP of melodic indie pop/rock which isn’t a million miles away from what Maximo Park does on a good day, and this is quite good.

The starter song, ‘Say Something’ has an excellent bass & drum interplay, and the choppy guitar lines add to the atmosphere. The lyrics are good and the chorus is both uplifting and anthemic “Say something good to me (x 2), Say something beautiful (x 2)”. This is a band that clearly has the ability to write good melodies with a rousing sing-along chorus.

‘Threads’ which follows is once again a stadium type rocker, with bass and drums very much in the forefront and a melodic spiky guitar line that works very well. Again the chorus is catchy and something that most people would sing along to after a few plays. “You’re a long way from home, how you gonna get back this time? It’s a long way to fall, how you gonna get back this time”.

‘L.D.R.’ is another good rocker, which boasts a chiming guitar line that reminded me of Pere Ubu’s ’30 Seconds Over Tokyo’ from the ‘Datapanik in the Year Zero’ EP, only slightly faster.

‘Lose Myself’ is again another strong track, a medium paced rocker, giving details of a bittersweet relationship break up and finding someone new, repeating the process. “Five days to fall in love, seven to let you go. All the walls I’ve built around my heart, cracks begin to show”, followed by “That’s all right, I’m in love again”. This again features strong musicianship and an easily recognisable chorus.

‘Ten Thousand Love Songs’ by this time, it was for me, ho hum yet another anthem. “You tear me apart, put me back together again”.

All in all this is a good, solid EP, the musicianship is sound and the lyrics interesting. The only problem I have with this is that every song appears to be written as a stadium anthem, and the band seems to be staying firmly within their comfort zone. The band is clearly very talented and is more than capable of breaking the mould and diversifying slightly. If that had done that for just one song, the EP would have been even better.
