Our Rating:
Well this really is quite a surprise. Jack Penate is an artist I’ve worked hard to avoid since he first burst onto the scene. ‘The Fly’ might have featured him every month for a year (which isn’t an issue in itself: not all the bands ‘The Fly’ cover or hype are complete rubbish), but none of the hype suggested for a second he was the kind of person whose music I’d want to hear.

The much-touted ‘new direction’ of his second album didn’t exactly have me racing to my local record store either (that my nearest record store’s now in the next city isn’t entirely the point). But then ‘Pull My Heart’ landed in my review pile, and... well, it’ ok. I don’t love it, but nor do I detest it.

Our Jack sounds like he’s spent time between albums listening to the poppier moments of The Cure’s back catalogue and the Associates. There’s a distinctly 80s feel to this mid-tempo, rather sloppy-suonding goodbye song, which has a touch of the slickness of ABC in all their laméd glory, and a hint of the bombast of The Associates, but sadly falls short in terms of bombast, drama, theatre and glitz. All of which means that, ultimately, it just falls short.
