Canterbury's 'Motion Picture Soundtrack' are evidently hell bent on making a big first impression with a widescreen sound that signifies a desire to skip the small club circuit and head straight for the stadium.
The three tracks on this EP are a taster for their forthcoming debut album and the title track blasts forth at full throttle and wastes no time in setting out their stall.
With such a grandiose sonic statement you can't help but expect some heightened eloquence from the singer, so weak lyrics like "I feel you love, everytime you're close by" and "Hold me like you're here" are a bit of a let down. The impression is that this is a simple love song which has morphed into a pomp-rock monster.
'Faults of a realist' has a curious stop-start structure like someone looking for top gear and crashing back to first. As with the 'Departure' it's rich is theatrical crescendoes and falsetto flourishes.

The last, and best, of the three tracks is Mirrors. The slow building moody piano and soulful vocals give the song a more restrained quality which comes as a welcome relief after the sound and fury of the preceding tracks. There's still the by now obligatory (and redundant) big finale but at least it creeps up gradually rather than assaulting you head on.
You certainly can't fault the band for ambition but I found the large scale dynamics exaggerated and lacking in subtlety. For all the big production values they remain a band who are more aspirational than inspirational.
