The opening Spectoresque drum beat suggests a 60s pop sensibility but the first (and last) line "In your youth you make plans for far off lands and high velocity" offer up a tale ,not so much a carefree celebration, but of a suburban angst.
Stairs To Korea is the curious alter ego of Icelander Will Vaughan who is now based in North London.
His voice betrays a nervousness, a campness even, and a self deprecating manner which extends to his description of this debut single a "budget anthem".
The tense delivery and references to cup cakes and belly aches give it the tone of skewed English charm but it also ends up sounding overly mannered and awkward.
Vaughan seems an interestingly eccentric character but on this evidence he still needs to find his true musical voice.
