Review: 'PEYOTI FOR PRESIDENT'
'YO NO QUERO TRABAJAR (Single)'

-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '28th September 2009'

Our Rating:
This multi-ethnic collective is fronted by an Anglo-Italian, Pietro Dimascio. For their 2009 live shows there were four other members drawn from Poland, Columbia, Portugal and Brazil.

In all, some 30 musicians have played on stage under this band name giving the sound a loose and spontaneous spirit in keeping with their avowed aim of acting globally and thinking laterally.

They refer to their brand of dance music as "rabble rousing punk doused with the fuel of social consciousness" and this mambo/reggae/rap fusion follows closely to the model set by Manu Chao, who , not coincidentally, they played support to in 2007.

This single, together with two remixes, tries to capture the energy and intensity of their live shows with each of the three versions clocking in at around 4 minutes. The title can loosely be translated as 'I have no desire to work'.

The first version is the most obviously polemical. Whilst the majority of the words are in Spanish , this opens with an extended radical rap in English warning against the dangers of being brainwashed and exploited by cable TV and politicians.

The 'Alberta in Love Remix' , has more of a slow burning atmospheric feel with a cut'n'paste instrumental groove. The supercharged 'Sabio Dance Remix' has a thumping beat and urgent dance rhythm.

This is infectious feel good party music with a moral conscience and a refreshing antidote to political apathy and musical lethargy.
