Review: 'SCHRAG, EMBER'
'A Cruel, Cruel Woman'

-  Album: 'A Cruel, Cruel Woman' -  Label: 'Lone Prairie Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '26th June 2009'-  Catalogue No: 'LPCD017'

Our Rating:
I'm not sure if Ember herself is the cruel, cruel woman who's the subject of this album, or if it's about some woman who she's less than enamoured with, but there's little sign of cruelty in her lyrics, and similarly, no obvious traces of anger or resentment. Instead, on he debut album, Ember gives us a collection of songs that portray a broad emotional - and indeed musical - range, painted using multitudinous shades from the broad folk palette.

From the up-tempo hoe-down of 'Cupid's Bloom' through the soulful darkness of 'The Philistine' to the world-worn country hues of 'Iowa,' there's a sense of honesty and a lack of pretence about 'A Cruel, Cruel Woman' that imbues the album with a humanity and warmth that's rather appealing.
