Review: 'Sophie's Pigeons'
'Live EP'

-  Label: 'Red Deer Club'
-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
It's well known that live recordings are notoriously difficult things. It's rare that the versions actually exceed the studio recordings, stripping much of whatever detail there may be in the composition, but equally rare for recordings to really fully capture and convey whatever made or makes the live experience so special.

Having not heard anything by Sophie's Pigeons previously, it's hard to make such a judgement. However, the sound quality of these tracks is excellent, and the performances are tight.

The talking before songs really does get quite irritating though, particularly the instructions to clap and sing along to 'Only Us,' when we hear the audience being told, 'When we get to this bit, Sam's going to do this and you're going to do this.' It's hard to tell if they actually do as they'e bid, and equally hard to care, in all frankness. The song itself is - like the rest of ths set - a rather twee harmony-fest that sounds more like vocal exercises than a song as such.

Perhaps you had to be there...
