Review: 'PROJECT SKYWARD'
'MOVED BY OPPOSING FORCES'

-  Label: 'Rocket Girl Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '2nd November 2009'-  Catalogue No: 'rgirl67'

Our Rating:
NYC's Project Skyward alternate between being a duo and a trio but is primarily the vision of singer/songwriter/programmer Ryan Field, aka 'Skyward".

Field has a degree in holistic science and astronomy, and uses what he calls "cosmic soundscapes and scientific metaphors" to express his reflections on life, the universe and everything - "sending messages through sound" as he sings on 'Hungry Ghosts'.

With eyes so firmly fixed on the stars, it seems paradoxical to label this as Shoegaze, although it is clearly within the same subgenre of bands like Slowdive and The Cocteau Twins. Robin Guthrie, of the latter has even leant his support to the Project to prove the point.

The slightly dated spatial guitar , synth ambience and fragile vocals of the album's opening two tracks (Canis Major & Sirius The Brightest Star) immediately establish a sound which is more ethereal than earthbound.

The ten tracks make for some warm yet emotionally detached music which never tries to impose itself on the listener.

In short, a nice undemanding listen more suited for daydreaming than go-getting.
