Review: 'HALEY, LISA & THE ZYDEKATS'
'ABSOLUTELY LIVE'

-  Label: 'Blue Fiddle Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2009'

Our Rating:
I don't consider myself to be a musical purist. I'd even go so far as to say I prefer contaminated versions of 'traditional' sounds and have little patience for slaves to authenticity for its own sake.

So while the Cajun and Zydeco music which originated in Lousiana centred on simple acoustic instrumentation of the accordion, fiddle and triangle I have no beef with the electrification and amplification of this music. What is less defensible is when a band reduce its innate magic and mystery to brash and soulless party music as happens in this tortuous album.

Recorded live at Bastille Day celebrations in Milwaukee in July 2008, it features eight tracks each with the same sledgehammer subtlety and some truly appalling shouty vocals.

Not so much founded on a tradition as trampling all over it.

Avoid at all costs.
