 A new Rosie Flores album (what joy) and one on Bloodshot Records entitled the Pine Valley Cosmonauts presents, Rosie Flores "Girl of the Century" is enough to have this pilgrim drooling at the mouth before the first cord is even stuck.
The Pine Valley Cosmonauts were founded and are driven by seminal punk poets The Mekons founder and post punk altcountry warrior John Langford, and are a vehicle of high consciousness country for the Welsh wizards new world Odessa in the Americas. Bloodshot Records are Chicago's, Americas and by association the worlds leading Alt-country label, and have thrown a welcoming arm around our émigrés care rounded shoulders, recently releasing P.V.C. as well as Waco Brothers and a raft of John Langford inspired offerings to an eager world new country order. Rosie Flores put the sass in Texsas, and has the rockingest rockabillity of any Rockabilly Filly alive "n" two stepping the circuit at the moment. The thought of a John Langford and Rosie Flores collaboration would have even a desert rattler foaming at the mouth.
So how does it shape up , well the full mix is here as you would expect, from a straight up country duet "Who's Going To Take The Garbage Out" through Tex Mex, Western Swing, Honky Tonk to the more melodic but no less powerful title track "Girl Of The Century". As testament to one line of this song "She is a peddler of Nocturnes and Rhythms" Rosey resembles that remark and does it with style, the album is vibrant and very much in the moment production wise and the performances are at a high level, from an esteemed band of Chicagos finnest musos.
With all Rosie albums there are guitars a plenty John throwing in his trademark chunks of Rhythm Rock, John Rice’s stringing out clean clean lines and Rosie slaying it with virtuosity as well as front and central Vocals, nailed (and swinging) to the fluid beat of Cosmonauts Tom Ray on bass, Joe Camarillo on drums. Recorded live in the studio with all the musicians close enough to hear each others instruments above the amplifiers, and see each others ecstatic emotions, (you would imagine) they must have had a lot of fun doing this, cause it sure is a lot of fun to listen to.
