Review: 'Dark Dark Dark'
'Bright Bright Bright'

-  Label: 'Supply and Demand Music'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '9th March 2010'

Our Rating:
Polite chamber-folk it might be, but Dark Dark Dark's sound is big big big in many places across the six tracks here.

There's a subtle moodiness about the title track, which combines both light and dark in its juxtaposition of lilting piano, gentle, slight sad-sounding strings and the lyrical content. The vocals aren't entirely gentle, however, possessing a slightly harsh edge that doesn't sit completely comfortably with the softer music.

The style is perhaps more fitting on the bittersweet 'Something for Myself,' and they do become buried by immense interventions from the chorus-line in places, such as on 'Make Time.' You might think I'd be grateful for this, but then again, the gale of voices surging together can also be a bit much given the context, blowing so hard as to bury the subtlety of the arrangements in a tidal wave of multiple vocals.

'Flood' has a nice swing to it, and a hint of Parisian cabaret and even a dash of James Bond, an unusual mix that's used to good effect. However, for all its sadness tinged with seaminess, I still don't feel any real connection or emotional depth. Similarly, the sparse simplicity of 'Wild Goose Chase' might place Nona's vocals to the fore, but it all feels a little contrived, a little too like a persona, rather than a song sung from the heart.
