Even though I can't quite hear the chimes of the ice cream van struggling up the hill here, TAHITI 80 are making an agreeable pop racket that seems tailor made for the summer.
"Soul Deep" (no, not The Box Tops one) is one of a clutch of totally immediate gems from the French quartet's recent "Wallpaper For The Soul" album and is quite probably the catchiest of all. It's got an openly melodic quality that recalls The Boo Radleys' perennial "Wake Up Boo", all supplemented by a string quartet, punchy brass section and a furtive-sounding flute.
My promo copy also tags on "Don't Look Below" from the album, which throws a more pensive, loop-based curve. It's got a nice way with multi-tracked harmonies and then surprises with some heavy, reverbed guitar toward the end. A contrast, you might say.

"Soul Deep", though, is the one you will hear blasting from car stereos all summer long. You'll no doubt be sick to death of it by the time August comes to an end, but for now it sounds extremely fresh and will surely worry the charts. Job done.
