Review: 'MARCH, CHARLIE ALEX'
'HOME/ HIDDEN'

-  Label: 'LOAF RECORDINGS'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'March 2010'-  Catalogue No: 'LOAF79'

Our Rating:
‘Home/Hidden’ is UK’s composer Charlie Alex March’s debut long player. The blurb that came with this describes his work as “a wonderfully melodic and satisfying affair, gloriously English in a non sniffy manner, like tea and crumpets or a stroll on an autumn day.”

I don’t know about that, but this is a well-realised debut, incorporating strings, treated piano and a range of electronic keyboard work, which I found surprisingly relaxing and comfortable to listen to.

However, something like this isn’t easy for me to review, as I find it quite hard to evoke a mood on paper from something I’ve listened to which has no lyrics!

There are several musical styles floating around in here, the opening track ‘Plan 9’ has elements of waltz in it, and a keyboard line that wouldn’t have seemed out of place on Magazine’s ‘Real Life’. Other highlights are Francisca’s Theme which features some nifty glockenspiel work, and ‘Clouds Over You Again’ which has some nice synth work which washes over you.

Overall, this is a really nice debut, but it is so eclectic, that I wonder exactly which audience it is pitched at.
