Review: 'WILLIAMS, KATHRYN'
'JUST A FEELING (Single)'

-  Label: 'One Little Indian'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '17th May 2010'

Our Rating:
Having resolutely ploughed the same furrow since her 2001 debut Little Black Numbers, Kathryn Williams doesn't seem unduly concerned that she has not yet broken into the mainstream.

The release of this quiet and melancholic song as a digital download seems mainly designed to reassure us that a recent change of label does not signal a change of style.

Her eighth studio album (The Quickening) and her first for One Little Indian will, she says, have "a slightly sinister palette with lyrics that are raw" as if this was something new.

Just A Feeling was apparently written in the back of a car driving at night in Los Angeles and documents the bleakness rather than the excitement in the huge density of traffic ("Our car in 20 million like a ghost").

It fits in well with her back catalogue of sad, sensual songs and has an intensity and fragile beauty we've come to expect from her.

It won't win her any new fans but I doubt she'll lose any sleep about that.
