Review: 'David Karsten Daniels & Fight The Big Bull'
'Though All the Fates'

-  Label: 'FatCat'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '14th June 2010'-  Catalogue No: 'DS7FAT77 (Download Only)'

Our Rating:
David Karsten Daniels hails from San Francisco, and already has two previous albums under his belt so to speak. 'Though All the Fates' is a taster for his forthcoming album 'I Mean To Live Here Still,' a collaboration with Fight the Big Bull, a 'Richmond, Virginia-based 9-piece avant-jazz collective.'

It's a slightly curious affair, combining an upbeat and almost skiffly folk acoustic guitar and snare drum with multi-layered brass. Daniels sings about Madera wine and China tea (something I associate with Leonard Cohen, at least in a lyrical context) and it's toe-tappingly accessible. There's a crazy trumpet break at the end that reminds me a bit of The Cure's 'Close to Me,' and I suppose that while David Karsten Daniels sounds nothing like Robert Smith, the slightly whimsical and quirky pop sensibility demonstrated here does mark some common ground. Most enjoyable.
