Review: 'POLLARD, SIMON'
'Revolution'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '2010'-  Catalogue No: 'SPCD001'

Our Rating:
If ever we've needed a revolution, it's now. I've been thinking this for a long time, as it happens, and occasionally I get the feeling that things really are on the brink of changing, and dramatically. The advent of the Internet coupled with the collapse of the music industry threatened a revolution of sorts. But so far, I'm not really feeling the momentum building. The playing field hasn't been leveled, and bands with money - usually from record labels - are the ones who get the promotion and thus get seen and heard on the Internet. Egalitarianism is a myth.

Simon Pollard seems to think there's still the potential for revolution, though, and I have to commend him for that. However, there's little revolutionary about this album. Hell, the opener sounds like Rod Stewart, while the title track sees him donning pink sunglasses and citing John and Yoko as exemplary revolutionaries. 'We could start this revolution in our heads, from our beds,' he sings, and I can't help but find myself growing frustrated. This kind of hippy, trippy idealism of the 60s ultimately came to nothing, and now we're really in the crap, what good will loafing about do?

Really, I hate to sound like a churl and put a damper on things. But... well, I just can't get the enthusiasm up for this record, despite the soaring, Pink-Floyd moments on tracks like 'Away.' It's technically competent and the songs are both well arranged and recorded, and likely to appeal to an awful lot of people. Unfortunately, it's just a bit MOR for me to really appreciate or recommend.
