'Human After All [Single]'

-  Label: 'Red Bull Records'

Our Rating:
Musically-speaking, the last few years of my life have been absolutely dominated by Scottish bands - Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Dupec, Penguins Kill Polar Bears - but Twin Atlantic, yet another Caledonian construction (this time straight out of those fertile breeding grounds of Glasgow), continue to pass me by a little.

Moreover, I'm rather at a loss to explain why. The single here has everything that should see it rocket to the top of the rock charts: crisp, clean production values and the same Edge-like chiming guitars as before, married to a level of intensity that I most recently heard in In Case Of Fire's debut, "Align The Planets". That said, despite being a radio edit (the omission of the word "fuck" and a shortened running time is all that's done to distinguish this single from its "Vivarium" mini-album incarnation), the song doesn't play entirely into the single-buying public's hands. Sure, it has the stratospheric chorus line, some meatier-than-a-72-ounce-steak slabs of guitar, and a set of lustily visceral lyrics (in fact it's worth buying the single just to hear McTrusty say "visceral") that make you feel like a shower and a change of clothes might be in order once the CD's out of the player. But it also retains a twitchy mid-song break that adds a layer of tension to proceedings, before the final chorus-line explodes out the back-door.

Once again, Twin Atlantic have thrown us an entirely competent, supremely energising and highly enjoyable track of Scottish rock.
