I know, they say that if you've nothing nice to say, don't say anything. But that isn't how reviewing works. Similarly, I've always maintained that a review is worthless if it isn't honest. This leaves me with a tough job, so I shall be brief and as gentle as possible.
'A Patch of Blue Sky' isn't outright lousy. In fact, it's fine. And that's all. Mid-paced, middle of the road, country-tinged Americana, it is what it is. Welch's material has been used by the likes of Johnny Cash, Linda Ronstadt, Garth Brooks and Waylon Jennings. He's had a song used on a Tuborg commercial. He's been signed to Warner Brothers. It's an impressive resume. The industry is full of Kevin Welches: people who produce music and do ok, get to work with big names and so on, without ever gaining any mainstream recognition of their own. There's a reason for this. They will, from time to time, produce perfectly listenable, adequate and competent albums that make sonic wallpaper for the masses Stateside. 'A Patch of Blue Sky' is just another such album.
