Review: '24 PESOS'
'Busted Broken And Blue'

-  Label: 'Ourgate Records'
-  Genre: 'Blues' -  Release Date: '19th July 2010'

Our Rating:
The "11 boot stompin' originals" on this album are intended as an antidote to recession hit Britain.

24 Pesos are a lively London based four piece led by Julian Burdock. His gruff vocals and dobro slide playing are efficiently backed by Moz Gamble on organ, Silas Maitland on bass and Mike Connolly on drums.

They like to keep things simple and the crisp production captures a raw edged live mood.

The ghosts of blues legends gathered on the strident opening track, Maxwell Street, set the tone, leaving no doubt that the focus is to be on good time values with no kow-towing to moaning minnies.

They apply an 'if it ain't broke why change it' approach to the genre as they run through a set list in the style of The Meters, Freddie King, Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf and other past masters.

They cover trusty themes of love, lust and loss through raunch'n'roll tunes like Lowdown Sweet And Dirty and Neckbones And Gumbo alongside moodier pieces like Somebody Else and Day Becomes Night.

The resolutely upbeat mood is established by rocking numbers like the jumpin' and jivin' title track or the hedonistic In The Summertime ("the heat is hot.......gabba gabba goo goo").

Nothing here is very original, nor does it pretend to be; it's just a no frills, no fillers take on the blues. Slick enough although also a bit samey.
