Our Rating:
This writer always thought one of Rock’n’Roll’s main purposes was to piss off the neighbours. However, if your neighbour is in fact a hugely successful Rock musician, that viewpoint seems rather redundant.

FILMS OF COLOUR singer Andy Clutterbuck clearly thinks so, but then his neighbour is none other than colossus-straddling Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Thus, instead of cranking the stereo up and threatening to torch his house, Andy guessed that gently dropping a demo tape through Mr. Martin’s front door might be more effective. To his amazement, only two days later he received a note of major encouragement. “Thanks for the demo CD. I really like your tunes! Keep it up!” scrawled an impressed Mr. M.

Suitably stoked, FILMS OF COLOUR did indeed keep on keeping on, coming to the attention of the nascent Label Fandango along the way. Now they’re ready to unleash their debut, double A-side single ‘Actions’/ ‘Colours’.   And it’s certainly promising. There is a tad too much of ye olde falsetto flight of fancy a la Messrs. Martin and Lightbody in Clutterbuck’s voice for my liking, but there’s no denying the confident rush of the chorus, the crystalline guitars or James Rees’ dextrous skill behind the drum kit. It all adds up to the sort of Editors-style earnest anthem which never sounds out of place in large fields or footy stadiums.

Nominal ‘flip’-side ‘Circles’ is also suitably big, crisp and efficient, with Rees’ percussive power again starring and the numb confusion of overloading modern day life reflected in lyrics like “I’m losing track of the people I’ve ever loved.” It also features an urgent final chorus where the phrase “it’s coming, it’s coming!” is frantically repeated. It seems fitting because on the strength of this you wouldn’t bet against Films of Colour making very serious headway in the coming months.
