Review: 'Seeland'
'Black Dot, White Spider EP'

-  Label: 'LOAF Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '20th September 2010'

Our Rating:
The original version has a smooth, piston-like propulsion by way of a rhythm and ticks along nicely in a popped-up take on Krautrock. There's a warmth about it, too, that makes for a rather enjoyable ride for the brief duration of a song that clacks along like a comfortable train journey.

From hereon in, it's remixes all the way. The Kelpe remix slows things down and spaces them out. It feels a little laboured, the beats plod and the bleeps and vocal stutters add nothing other than to say 'this is a remix'. It sounds all too much like pissing about for its own sake. The Ghostape remix is altogether more interesting, building round a tribal rhythm, weaving the other elements of the song almost subliminally through the mix. This is inventive remixing, even if it does sound a bit 'Gracelands' as covered by Animal Collective. Tom Furse's remix brings the rhythm to the fore once more, while the Curcueil remix is an expansive piece of industrial minimalism, and for my money is the pick of the crop.

The diverse nature of the remixes is definitely a redeeming feature here - although as an EP, I can't help but feel just a little short-changed by the lack of material (although given that it's available as a free download from their MySpace page, I suppose it would be churlish to grumble too much).
