Review: 'SILENT DISGUISE'
'Blueprints EP'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '26th October 2010'

Our Rating:
Croydon quintet Silent Disguise describe themselves as 'melodic hard rock band who push the boundaries in every direction and break the mould with every track they create.' On the strength of this, their second release following last year's sold-out debut 'New Heights,' at least the first part of this statement is true. Yes, plenty of rock and plenty of melody, but I've heard it all a million times before.

Still, it's well executed and there's no question that there's a skinny-jeaned, studded belted, coiffed-haired audience for this kind of stuff. Strictly uptempo from the start, there's a clear attention to detail, and the production's crisp and clear and, well, arguably a little manufactured sounding. But then, a recent study showed that in a sound test, under 25s actually prefer the compressed, fizzy sound of MP3 to either CD or vinyl, so who am I to comment as a die-hard vinyl fan who's substantially over the age of 25?

The title track features some nice, delicate guitar picking and contrasting vocal harmonies, plus an anthemic, lighter-waving chorus that's impressive in its enormity, while 'Only by the Night' whips itself into a real frenzy of rapid-fire percussion, wall-of-noise guitars and distorted screaming. Rounding things off, '20 Stories' is a full throttle assault of chugging guitars and driving drumming that ends with a low, guttural growl.

It might not be my bag, but it's tight, punchy and anything but boring.
