Review: 'SINGLETON, CHRIS & THE DISTRACTIONS'
'LOSE IT/ LOU REED'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: 'October 2010'

Our Rating:
Chris Singleton suffers from hyperacusis: a rare ear condition which leads him to find everyday noises extremely painful. He also experiences synesthesia which enables him to “see” sounds and words as colours and assign personalities to them.

How this leads him to creating perfectly crafted pop music, I’m not really sure. Lose It is a rollicking, baggy Primal Scream style tune about a night out at a Dublin disco in the 90s (Singleton obviously still holds a grudge about the events of the night). It’s delivered with an Edwyn Collins drawl and an absolute pristine production. There’s a chorus which if you let it will swirl round your brain for days, unfortunately there’s also nothing preventing you switching it off after 30 seconds. It’s quite simply musical horses for courses.

Lou Reed is a tongue in cheek snipe at the “legions of musicians who think they are the next Velvet Underground”. Unfortunately, when it sounds exactly like I’m Waiting For The Man the message gets swamped amongst its own self importance and irony.

These two songs may make more sense in the context of his eclectic Lady Gasoline album. Taken on their own however, we don’t grasp a true picture of Singleton’s personality, although the glimpses are intriguing.
