Review: 'Rubicks'
'Worship'

-  Label: 'Sharp Attack Records'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '15th November 2010'

Our Rating:
Back in the Spring, The Rubicks' single 'Giddy Up' got me enthused by its dark and distinctly alternative take on the prevailing fashion for 80s synth revivalism. Brooding, spiky, rough around the edged, it sounded like the kick up the arse the scene needed.

It's perhaps because 'Giddy Up' was so damn good that 'Worship' comes as something of a disappointment. It's by no means a bad single: far from it, in fact, and by most standards, it's a belter. It has a number of strong selling points, specifically a cracking chorus, a hook that's large enough to land a whale and a bleakness - both sonically and lyrically - that drags the listener into a dark place filled with reverb and an equal desire to dance and die.

The downside is that despite its dark disco leanings, 'Worship' is just a tad staid and predictable, which means it's only 'bloody good' rather than 'bloody brilliant.' Still, after a couple f spins, I'll be more than happy to settle for that and give Rubicks the credit they're due.
