Limerick/ Cork alliance Out on a Limb have already brought us one inspired split single pairing this year courtesy of the newly pop-oriented Windings and the enigmatic Vertigo Smyth.
For their second such foray of 2010, they have again come up trumps, although the bands in question couldn’t be more disparate.
This time, we have two real sonic heavyweights scrapping it out. In the blue corner, we have Dublin’s GUILTY OPTICS. Boy, is their track ‘White Teeth’ a wake-up call. A seething slab of ramalama with a Math-Rock edge, plaster-stripping vocals (think giveamanakick, the much-missed Mclusky and a cement mixer jamming feverishly), it’s explosively loud and as in yer face as a demolition ball. Which, in this case, seems quite acceptable – at least when you’ve retrieved the remains of your brain matter from the floor.
In the red corner, we have the marginally more controlled C!TIES from Ennis in beautiful County Clare. They supply an instrumental which is initially hi-hat heavy and nervy, but soon begins to flex its’ muscles. It proceeds to throw you with any number of false endings and finally culminates in a massive maelstrom of a final crescendo. Curiously, its’ ‘no vocal’ approach seems radically different once again from other all-instrumental outfits like Rest or And So I Watch You From Afar who – spookily – I’ve also been writing about today.

While Guilty Optics probable shade it on points thanks to their sheer unbridled psychosis, ultimately this is another killer one-two from Out on a Limb. Here’s to their next bout showcasing inventive championship contenders.
