Review: 'HOLTKAMP, KOEN'
'Gravity / Bees'

-  Label: 'Thrill Jockey'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '1st November 2010'-  Catalogue No: 'Thrill 254'

Our Rating:
This excellent mini LP features just two tracks of fluid drone-based ambience combining live recordings with studio experimentations.

The tracks are :
1. In The Absence of Gravity Please Note the Position of the Sun (15.44)
2. Loosely Based on Bees (14.53)

It is Holtkamp's first solo release on Thrill Jockey. Previously he has released two solo albums under the name Aero and four albums as Mountains, a duo project with Brendon Anderegg. He also released another album under his own name called Field Rituals on Type records.

Gravity is a slow piece built mainly around layers of processed acoustic guitar, analog synthesizers, and electronics. It is based around a 2008 solo performance in Brighton with Holtkamp recording over a delay system inspired in part by Terry Riley's tape loops (time-lag accumulators).

In contrast, Bees is mainly a studio creation with only a few live additions from a 2008 performance added towards the end.

Here he uses recordings taken using a tiny set of binaural microphones in a beehive - instruments loosely emulating the buzzing. Now that's what I call drone music!

If you love dreamy, unhurried, meticulous pieces by artists like Stars Of The Lid and Lichens this is a must.
