Review: 'Enora'
'Anchor / Canis Lupus'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
Being a jaded, cynical bastard isn't all that much fun, you know. Sure, there's something cool about being aloof and distanced from everything, but really, most jaded, cynical bastards, when pushed, will admit that they live in hope of being proved wrong, being surprised, instead of experiencing the perpetual disappointment of being right about the fact that everything’s crap. At least, that's my experience of life.

So when a download link to Enora’s debut single lands in my inbox, I'm, prepared for disappointment. The press blurb only builds my expectation of being let down, telling me that the band are 'Busting straight out of the Midlands, England.' Wow. I'm busting with excitement. But there's more: 'The five piece who have perfected the art of fast aggressive dis-chorded guitars, panic stricken vocals with an epically-ambient chorus have made a name for themselves as being able to have mastered the balance between the ambient and hardcore genres.'

A-Side 'Anchor' is definitely more ambient than hardcore, a mid-tempo piano-led emo-core number, high on 'emotion,' low on beef or excitement. But AA side and title track from their album, 'Canis Lupus' prompts me to put down the lighter I've been waving like a tool and listen up. A full-throated blast of mathcore-metal with a touch of post-rock, the elements may sound familiar, but not in this combination. It's tight and has a real power that's hard to ignore.

Jaded and cynical I may be, but I do like to discover music that surprises me. With this single, Enora have delivered just that.
