Review: 'WAY YES'
'Herringbone (EP)'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '14th December 2010'

Our Rating:
The core duo of Glenn Davis and Travis Hall from Columbus (Ohio) have gathered together some like-minded pop souls to make a quirky record that has earned them the less than snappy genre label "afro beat tropical garage psych boogie".

In 6 tracks, and just 15 minutes, they showcase an economy of energy and an exuberance of spirit that you could see as the missing link between The Strokes and Vampire Weekend.

The fact that elsewhere they have made a straight cover of 10cc's Dreadlock Holiday for a Christmas album should give a flavour of where they are coming from.

You'd have to have had a particularly bad day not to raise a smile to some of the lyrics on Herringbone. For instance Cinnamon , the opening track, includes the sweet and savoury line, sung in Kermit The Frog accent!, "If I've got a roof / And memories of you /I could live off candy".

Titles like Spicy Ice Cream and Plastic Crystal Skull Spoons make clear that their purpose is not to address any of life's weightier issues.

While Color Blind is about being tired of a dull routine , this is treated as a good reason for a pick-me-up rather than an excuse for languishing in self pity.

They have been compared to Beat Happening and share their "wear a jolly crown" attitude to Indie pop.

If you were to ask me if they'd achieved their goal of producing "a diverse windows-down, exuberant listening experience" I would reply in the affirmative.

A perfect Summer record for those dreary Winter days.
