Review: 'Moulettes'
'Horses for Hearses'

-  Label: 'Balling the Jack'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '2010'-  Catalogue No: 'BTJ02'

Our Rating:
This bunch certainly like their horses. Just check the titles: 'Dark Horse', 'Rocking Horse', 'Straight from the Horse's Mouth', the title track... No, wait. They're all different versions of the same song. 'Horses for Hearses' strikes me as being something of an oddity, and it's small wonder I'm confused.

For a start, it's a single release but contains six tracks. Four of them are different versions or mixes of the same song, but they all have different titles. Plus, although by Moulettes, not all of the tracks are performed by them: 'Rocking Horse' isn't a remix of 'Horses for Hearses' by Viva Sleep, but an actual cover recording. Huh?

The Moulettes' performances are overtly folky and quite punchy, with their multi-collaborative live recording of .Mad Tom of Bedlam. being a fairly rowdy and shadowy affair that brings a lot of depth to the song that's absent from Steeleye Span's renowned version. The reinterpretations are nothing if not varied, ranging from the emo-tinged rock of the aforementioned Viva Sleep version, to the dancefloor-friendly 'Dark Horse'.

Ulimately, it's hard to get a handle on Moulettes, but at least they're not dull.
