'Play' begins building some nice atmosphere, before a crisp, overdriven guitar comes chugging in over the top and bulldozes straight through it. Thankfully, 'Play' avoids becoming some awful leather-trousered 90s US rock schtick by balancing these rockist tendencies with a weaving lead guitar line that has a decidedly gothic edge. This is only enhanced by singer/guitarist Grant's baritone vocal delivery.
None of this be entirely surprising from a band that took its name, in part at least, from a Joy Division song ('Isolation'), while listing The Cult, Placebo, New Order, Bauhaus and She Wants Revenge amongst their (admittedly diverse) influences. 'Play' brings a rock sensibility and groove to the arty New Wave party, and to good effect.

The Peter Hook produced debut album could well be one to listen out for, but in the meantime, this is almost certain to attract some attention, and rightly so.
