There's something cool about the split 7" single as a format, and for someone like me, who used to spend many long hours in record shops flicking through import singles and discovering many great bands (and picking up records by bands who contributed one side of a shared single), it's heartening to see that the format's not completely dead in the download age.
This particular release sees NY duo Hunters and Montreal 'dawg punk' band Dead Wife share a slab of wax, which is limited to just 300 copies.
There are some names to conjure with behind Hunters. This might be their debut relese, but it's produced by James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins and mixed by Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Cool? Cred? You betcha.
Their track, 'Deadbeat' is proper, heavy-duty, grungy noisy shit of the sort that you’d find on labels like Amphetamine reptile and Touch 'n' Go in the 90s. The bass positively throbs, and over the spiralling cacophony of dirty, dirty guitars, Isabel Ibsen's vocals are charged and sleazy in the way that Lydia Lunch's vocals are charged and sleazy. With or without high-profile, super-hip names flying their flag, Hunters are almost certain to go places.

Dead Wife's 'RX From Dr Grey' is a raw, trebly blast of No-wave punk that's over almost before it's begun. With no name producers here, it’s not so much underproduced and unproduced, the resultant clanging, hollering racket being an authentic, unbridled noise explosion. 'Fuck you's' don't come much more unapologetic and assertive than this.
