History is not fixed. It is subject to interpretation, the reliance on documents and accounts that may or may not be accurate or even genuine. It can be manipulated, adjusted, reordered, events realigned, even erased. Even so, if you're going to rewrite history, it pays to cover your tracks and to be consistent. And so it is that I find myself with a copy of 'Would You Be So Kind', the debut single by Lotte Mullan. What perplexes me is the fact I reviewed her previous debut single at the tail end of 2010. But ultimately, what difference does it make?
She may have an impressive CV and show a commendable versatility and dedication - jobs at a major record label, and as a radio plugger and tour manager furnished her with the knowledge to her own label and develop her own career, but none of this makes for an exciting single. It's easy on the ear, and I'm sure plenty of people will really dig it, but in being so undemanding, it's also less than enthralling. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind...
