Review: 'MISS QUINCY'
'Your Mama Don't Like Me'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '24th January 2011'

Our Rating:
This is an album of earthy, folk-country blues mixed with the kind of feisty frontier spirit you can envisage going down a storm in a boozy saloon bar. The western theme is flagged up by the cover image which shows a Calamity Jane style cowgirl taking aim with her shotgun.

It's a warm-hearted album despite the fact that it was recorded in a small cabin in Northern British Columbia with temperatures outside dropping to -40°.

Miss Quincy takes on the role of a fun loving but 'Bad Luck Woman' resigned to the fact that water and whiskey offer more reliable company than the typical cowboy clientele.

She puts on a brave face, even when singing of how "married men and whiskey is like dragging a dead horse around" (Dead Horse).

The opening, and title, track sets the unwavering upbeat tone with backing that includes trumpet and tap dancing.

In recent shows Miss Quincy plays electric guitar accompanied by Tyler Toews but on this album she plays only acoustic guitar and banjo backed by a band of fellow-Canadian roots musicians on classic bluegrass instruments like mandolin, steel guitar, upright bass and dobro.

Miss Quincy's vocals on these ten tracks may not be subtle but she belts out the songs in a feisty manner well-suited to the good time mood of the record.
